E05 – Of Food Carts & Riots

Views :

In 2007 during the 2nd Iraq war, American generals were posted throughout the country to maintain law and order in Iraq. In a small town called Tikrit, an American general observed that the biggest problem he faced there was riots, as lots of them took place here. One day, while sitting in his Office overlooking the plaza, he saw a crowd of people build up and an idea struck him. He picked up the phone called the mayor of the town and asked “Mayor, if I ever call you and ask you to remove the food carts from the plaza, will you do that?” the mayor asked, “Why on earth would we ever need to?” The general said, “Will you please just go with me?”. The mayor agreed to do so. The next time the general saw a build-up of people at the plaza, he called the mayor and said, “Mayor, please remove the food carts”. The Mayor removed the food carts, and sure enough the build-up never happened. Those people who came in the morning, at some point felt hungry and not finding anything to eat left the plaza. With a small thing like removing the food cart, he brought down the no. of riots by over 60%! Such an enriching story!
