On 28th Oct, 2022, the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) announced pay equity for Indian women cricketers. It rightfully got a lot of media coverage. Biases that exist which are easy to spot can be corrected if the organisation intends to do the same. But what happens when the bias is hidden. Hidden biases often hide in plain sight and are usually created not out of bad intent but because no one actually thought about it. Sometimes it is difficult to believe if it even exists. Today’s story is a powerful reminder of the existence of hidden bias. Hopefully, it will prod all of us to relook, and seriously question assumptions that processes don’t discriminate because there was no such intent when the process was put in place. In fact, I would be delighted to hear how you are working to find such biases in your organisation.
