E65 – Alan Mulally – The Ford Traffic Light

Views :

Ever heard of the watermelon effect? I was introduced to the term a few years ago and it makes sense. The name has to be understood quite literally. Describe a watermelon. Besides being a fruit, round, and full of seeds, it is green outside – but red inside. And that is exactly WHERE the name comes from. The watermelon effect is what happens when employees dare not tell management what they really think and how it really goes. Instead, they colour all the measurements green, as if everything is going great, even if it is not. It often happens when sharing errors or hurdles are looked down upon in an organisation. Where the belief is people are a problem and not people have a problem. Here is a story about Alan Mulally and the Ford Motor Company.
