E71 – Stanley Milgram

Views :

In 1960, the major Holocaust perpetrator Adolf Eichmann was captured in Argentina by Israeli agents and brought to Israel to stand trial. His defence was that he was merely following instructions when he ordered the deaths of millions of Jews. Imagine you are driving in the city, and two people wearing traffic police uniforms stop you. They ask for your license and car papers. After viewing them and consulting their hand-held device, they tell you that there is a statewide alert with your vehicle number and ask you to accompany them to the police station. How ingrained is our obedience to authority? Would you insist that they show their identity card to prove that they are indeed traffic police? Would you ask to see a copy of the statewide alert? Or would you curse your luck and accompany them hoping you will be able to sort it out with the senior officers? During the 1960s, Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted a series of obedience experiments that led to some surprising results.
